An Abridged Version of Viața cuvioșilor părinți Varlaam și Iosaf de la Indiia (2) Text. Part 1

Abstract

The scientific edition of the popular novel about the life of Saints Barlaam and Joasaph contains the first part of the text transcribed from the Cyrillic script into Romanian, included between pages 196^r and 105^v of the Romanian manuscript with no. 1487 and preserved at the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Chisinau. The actual text of the Chisinau copy is preceded by a Note on the edition, in which, following a brief characterisation of the previous publications made in 2006 and 2007, the solutions adopted for the transcription of words that require additional explanations regarding the interpretation of phonetic values are described, as well as other aspects related to the editing of monuments in the Old Romanian language. The edition also includes a critical apparatus in which the mistakes and changes of the copyist, the unusual spellings or those that lend themselves to several interpretations, as well as the particular reproductions existing in previous printings have been included.
